Going Quiet for a Few Weeks
The free essays pause until August 31. Sermon notes and Empire Watch continue on schedule
My dear ones,
I’ve been publishing five pieces more or less a week here since October, which is about ten months without a real break. And I’ll be honest, I’m feeling it.
So I’m taking August off from the free essays. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will be quiet until the 31st.
I want to be clear that I’ll continue to send out the Prophetic Imagination Sermon Notes on Tuesdays, and Empire Watch will still show up in your inbox on Thursdays. If you’re a paid subscriber and you’ve come to rely on this stuff, I want to honor my commitment to you. So, paid content is on the same schedule, all month. The same goes for comped subscriptions. Nothing about that changes.
I’ve gone back and forth with myself. I considered trying to write ahead so that nobody would notice I was gone. Then it struck me that I’ve spent the better part of the last year writing about a politics and an economy that measures our worth by what we produce.
At the same time, I’ve been writing about a God who doesn’t. So, it feels hypocritical to reinforce the very habits I want to see changed by trying to brazen it out and keep producing. I want to challenge the idea that our output is the most important thing about us.
If something happens that I can’t keep my mouth shut about, I’ll write. Otherwise, I’ll see you on the 31st. (Let’s hope it’s a quiet August... [*crosses fingers while rolling eyes*]).
As much as anything, thanks for reading. Ten months ago, Heretic Adjacent was an idea that I wasn’t sure I could pull off consistently. But here I still am, and so are you. Now it feels like the beginnings of a community for the struggling (especially the struggling introverts) and for those trying to find a bit of hope in this grim moment of our history. So, thank you for your support and your friendship.
I’ll see you at the end of the month.
Be gentle and brave,
Derek

Rest well! And, thank you for all the writing you have done. It helps me know I am not losing my mind or my faith.
Enjoy a break, you deserve it!!
