As a woman pastor, I have encountered such "put downs" often from other male conservative pastors, but have been blessed to serve congregations who enthusiastically welcomed my ministry in the United Methodist (3 for 2 years each), and United Church of Christ (2 for a total of 30 years). I always told my critics, "am I to ignore or dismiss the call of God?"

Thank you for this! I was in a fundamentalist, evangelical church for nearly 25 years. I joined it with my husband - we were newlyweds, and it helped us in many ways. But something happened to my husband over the years. He began to want more power and control over me, and to resent my intelligence. He actually yelled at me once, "You wear the pants in the family!" I didn't know he was taking notes on our competition for who wore the pants. After 20 years of marriage the mask finally came off and he became abusive. He used tactics such as kidnapping our children, imagine! Thinking that I would submit. When I got a restraining order, he didn't repent; he got angrier because he wasn't in control. He's still in that same church. I left -- and I'm free! Everything you said is true. The worse part was the denial of the church. "You're making this up - he really didn't do or say that." Wow.
